Brief History of Tien Hau

TIEN HAU, her real name, LIM MAK NGEO, was born in 960AD on the 23rd day of the 3rd month, according to the Calendar-during the reign of the first Emperor of the Soong Dynasty. It was an auspicious day, which heralded her birth as the sky was exceptionally bright, flowers were in full bloom and the atmosphere was wholesome.

The family were fisherman living in the Mei Chow in the Province of Fuken, The family’s livelihood depended on fishing and the harvest of other marine life. She was a good swimmer; even at a very tender age she would risk her life to help those in difficulty, even those in stormy weather and adverse sea conditions. Her many heroic acts were appreciated by all the inhabitants of her village; she seemed to be endowed with some supernatural powers.

She was very intelligent and entered school at 8 years of age. At 13 she met with a Tao teacher who taught her the virtues of Taoism. With her spiritual powers, the teacher guided her to go forth and help people in all manner of difficulties, especially those in distress and in disasters at sea. After innumerable rescues she was named the Virtuous and Talented Lady.
